Abstrakt

The aim of the paper is to identify and interpret the references to dowry in the comedies of T. Maccius Plautus (ca. 254–184 BCE). Plautus has traditionally been regarded as a valuable source for the pre-classical Roman law, as most of the preserved Roman legal texts are from the classical, postclassical and Justinianic era. Since Plautus adapted new Attic comedies, his works have intermixed Greek and Roman elements, which poses a challenge from the interpretative perspective. The paper offers a short introduction into the evolution of dowry in Greek and Roman world and then proceeds to the analysis of the use of lexeme "dos" and its derivates in the comedies of Plautus. Based on higher frequency of attested use of these lexemes in two comedies, Trinummus and Aulularia are singled out for a more detailed analysis, followed by a more general examination of the remaining plays.
