Abstrakt

The theme of the willing or consenting cuckold is a recurring topic in Western literature throughout the ages. It refers to the figure of the husband who is aware of his wife's infidelity and accepts or even encourages it. The social type reflected in this topic, especially in its variant of the leno maritus, who encourages his wife's infidelities with a view to obtaining some benefit from her lovers, was often criticised in Greek and Roman theatre and poetry — sometimes associating it with the metaphor of the Cornucopia applied to the adulterous woman in relation to her consenting husband — and it must have been real and relatively widespread, as some Roman laws outlawed the practice, understanding it to be a pernicious form of covert prostitution. In Plutarch's work, the use of this trope can be detected on at least four occasions, and in two of them it is related to Roman figures of high political importance. Our work will consist of analysing these passages and highlighting how Plutarch exploits the topic — and its associated metaphor — not only for social criticism, as it was originally used in comedy and satire, but also for literary and philosophical criticism.
