Holly Blood of Z. N. Hippius : symbolic structure of play

Vol.20,No.2, Supplementum(2017)

Abstract
The author of the article analyses the one of the dramatic works of Zinaida Nikolaevna Gippius (1869–1945), whose activities were in the first decades of her literary career connected with the "first wave" of Russian symbolism, on the background of Russian symbolist's conception of dramatic art. The author is trying to find essence of the elements of symbolic structure on the one of three Hippius plays Svjataja krov' (Holly Blood, 1901), Makov cvet (The Red Poppy, 1912), and Zelenoe kol'co (The Green Ring, 1914). The points which Hippius stressed in each of these three plays are quite different. They correspond to the various stages in the history of Russian culture and to the meta-physical and socio-political thought of the periods which the plays concern. For this reason is very important to analyse each of this plays a separate. his text of Holly Blood is important not only as an artistic resumé of Hippius ́play, but also as an interesting example of her experimentation in construction of dramatical conflict.
