The author describes the activity of Eduard Štorch as a teacher on Czech minority schools at thevery beginning of the 20th century in brown coal district of Most (Brüx) in Northern Bohemia. It deals with Štorch’s observation of local social and cultural situation and their impacts onchildren’s attitude to school, society etc. Štorch tried to examine the ways of their thinking and to influence them. He succeeded step by step in gaining their confidence; he could use it for further educational influence. The example of these children made him to think about the changes in educational praxis, about the necessityto teach more illustratively, funny, with a greater respect to the local conditions. He proposed toconcede to this area greater school autonomy. These changes could have been used for a Fundamentals experiment, important for the whole Austrian school system. Štorch’s articles excited public attention, but his proposals were not realized. After the World War I they were nevertheless used as a starting point of Štorch’s pioneering educational attempts.
