The article deals with principles, perspectives and current state of inquiry–based education in humanities. This concept is taken from Science didactics and builds on the principlesm of pedagogical constructivism. The general aim of inquiry based education is to develop historical thinking competence. The author implemented content analysis of foreign History textbooks forsecondary grammar schools (British, French, Swiss and Austrian) and compared them with contemporary Czech textbooks. She focused on chapters devoted to the development of research competencies of pupils and methods of analysis and interpretation of historical sources.
