International Summer School of Museology was established on the decision of the General Conference of UNESCO. Moravian Museum in Brno was in charge of its founding. From the beginning there were two most active personalities: leading Czech anthropologist and museologist Jan Jelínek and founder of Museum Studies in Brno Z. Z. Stránský. The first course took place in 1987 and the School quickly gained considerable international reputation. A lot of world's museologists were there as lecturers or listeners. The disintegration of the Eastern Block was a new impetus, the School begun to implement also specialized courses. Gradually, the School get into serious financial, personnel and organizational difficulties, caused also because Stránský left Brno in 1998. At the end of its existence, the school was directly organized by the UNESCO Chair of Museology and World Heritage. The last ISSOM course took place in 1999.
