Abstract

The article deals with the perception of the topic of dying and death by child visitors in the museum environment. The aim of the article is to understand the perception of the topic of death by these visitors in a museum exhibition and to verify how this perception is determined by their cognitive and emotional development or the taboo of the topic in society and how the children's understanding of the concept of death is influenced by their individual experiences. The article also includes a brief overview of the history of research dealing with the topic of children's conception of death and also an inquiry which took place in 2024, examining the reactions of child visitors to the permanent exhibition of human remains in the Ossuary at the Church of St. James in Brno. Based on the research results, recommendations are given for the appropriate presentation and communication of the topic of death to child visitors to museums, with the aim of minimizing their stress so that a balance between education and the protection of the child's psyche is achieved.
