The Idea of Slavery in the History of European and North American Thinking
Vol.13,No.2(2012)
Abstract
The text deals the idea of slavery in the history of European and North American thinking. It focuses on the set of sixteen essays Enslaved by Freedom, in which Petr Bláha maps a concept of slavery in the writings of selected philosophers and concentrates mainly on the ideas of the European canon. It proceeds chronologically in the traditional way from antiquity and continues until the 20th century. The authors, with the most formative influence on Bláha’s thinking, are early modern philosophers with whom he shares both themes and the style of writing. It is related to the interest in the idea of freedom, which, to some extent, stood in opposition to the idea of slavery. It is the paradoxical source of the idea of „enslaved by freedom.“
