Prisons are social environments structured by institutional mistrust, fragile social ties, and practices of instrumentalizing religious identity for institutional or personal benefits These dynamics shape interactions both among prisoners and between prisoners and prison staff. Within this context, prison chaplains occupy a structurally ambiguous position at the intersection of institutional authority and pastoral care. Although chaplains are formally embedded within the prison system, they are often able to establish relationships with inmates grounded in trust. Moreover, chaplains themselves identify trust as a prerequisite for meaningful pastoral engagement in prison settings. This study analyses the mechanisms through which prison chaplains build and sustain trust-based relationships within Czech prisons and demonstrates how accompaniment functions as a key relational strategy for navigating institutional constraints.
