Author Guidelines

Submission of manuscripts

All contributions should be sent in electronic form to religio@phil.muni.cz in the correct format explained below. In the first version of the paper, it is admissible to use a different type of bibliographical referencing insofar as it is comprehensible, clearly organized and cohesive. However, in the case of the contribution being accepted for publication, the text must be adjusted to the Chicago style of bibliographical references used in Religio.

A necessary part of all contributions (with the exception of news and reviews) is an abstract (see below). Also, in the cover letter, please state the institution you are aligned to.

The editor will confirm the receipt of the contribution and will refer it to the peer review process.

Editorial Board decision deadlines

The decision of the Editorial Board to accept the manuscript for the second round of the review process (i.e. to send the paper to anonymous reviewers) will usually be communicated to the author within 2 months after submission of the manuscript. If the manuscript is submitted before 15 March, the author will receive the first decision of the Editorial Board (i.e. acceptance without changes, with minor/major changes, or rejection of the paper) in early June. If the manuscript is submitted before 15 September, the first decision of the Editorial Board is usually available in early December.

If the actual number of accepted papers, the return for editing, or the balance of content and size of the issue does not require a delay, papers are usually published in the following issue after a positive decision by the Editorial Board (acceptance without changes or with minor changes), i.e. after the decision in June in issue 2 of that year and after the decision in December in issue 1 of the following year.

Preconditions for publishing in Religio

The preconditions for publishing a contribution in Religio include:

  • submission of an original text that has not been published or offered for publication elsewhere;
  • rigorous checking of the manuscript before its submission;
  • rigorous checking of the accuracy of bibliographical references (including page numbers);
  • rigorous checking of the accuracy of citations and paraphrases;
  • rigorous and timely revision of the text in the proofreading phase and the making of necessary corrections in cooperation with the redaction

Sections; the length of contributions

The editor accepts the following types of contributions:

(a) Articles. A comprehensive study with a length of 20 to 35 standard pages (36,000 to 63,000 characters including spaces and footnotes).

(b) Commentaries and Discussions. Shorter papers on a particular issue, analytical overview articles about a specific topic and the state of relevant research, review articles dealing with several books within the wider context of the state of research, or discussions having 10-25 standard pages in length (18,000 to 45,000 characters including spaces and footnotes).

(c) Materials. Shorter primary sources with an introduction, translations of original materials with a commentary, visual materials with a commentary etc. having 10-25 standard pages in length (18,000 to 45,000 characters including spaces and footnotes).

(d) News. Important news related to the subject area of the study of religions, reports from scientific conferences etc. having 2-5 standard pages in length (3,600 to 9,000 characters including spaces and footnotes).

(e) Reviews. Up to 7 standard pages in length (12,600 characters including spaces).

The section Special Feature is intended to comprise contributions dealing with a single topic, and thus to create a thematic section within the journal. Texts within this section are supposed to correspond to the parameters of articles.

The format of contributions

The editor accepts only contributions submitted electronically (sent as an attachment to the email address of the journal). The formats .doc and .docx are preferred. It is necessary to use the automatic numbering of footnotes. Manuscripts that do not comply with these criteria or which exhibit problems caused, for example, by conversion from non-preferred formats will be returned to the author for formal editing.

Citations in original languages different from the language of the contribution should be placed in footnotes (in italics). In the main body of the manuscript, translations into the language of the contribution should be used.

Transcription of languages using other than Latin alphabets

The journal accepts only texts using the Latin alphabet. Parts of texts in which other alphabets are used should be transcribed or transliterated according to the conventions of the particular field of study.

While transcribing Semitic languages it is possible to use alef signs (we use a special sign for the aspiration instead of c in the form of the upper index), ajin signs, as well as letters with dots (see an example http://www.casr.cz/religio/transkripce-ukazka.doc, which can be used to copy the signs into your text; all these signs can be also found in text editors via the function Insert/ Symbol. Please use the Times New Roman font).

References

References are located in the automatically numbered footnotes (please do not create footnotes manually) according to the Chicago citation style (18th edition, 2024) - the "notes and bibliography" system. All information on citation style is available on The Chicago Manual of Style website here.

At the end of each text, there must be a complete list of references and sources used, headed "Bibliography", edited according to the Chicago citation style.

The abstract, key words, and affiliation

An abstract of no more than 150 words should be included on the first page of articles, commentaries and discussions, materials or contributions to the Special Feature sections. The first page should also include 4-6 keywords separated by semicolons, the name of the institution with which you are affiliated and a contact email (institutional).

Book Reviews

Book reviews should include the name of the author, title, place of publication, publisher, year of publication, total number of pages, and ISBN.

There are no footnotes in reviews; nevertheless, necessary references to literature can be cited directly in the body of the text in parentheses by means of the citation system described above. References to specific pages in the reviewed book are supplemented by the abbreviation “p.” (e.g. “as the author claims (p. 151)”).

It is recommended to inform the managing editor about the intended review in advance in order to prevent the situation in which two authors review the same book for Religio.

Pictures, tables, graphs

Images or any other supplements (tables, illustrations, graphs etc.) should be provided with a number and a legend in the following form:

Fig. 1. Antichrist in the form of a surreal creature. It has a crown on the head. Taken from: M. Cherniavsky, Kniha..., 43.

Fig. 2. The ritual of initiation of the !Kung people. Photographed by the author, 27. 9. 2010.

Tab. 1. A comparison of typical features of two modes of religiosity.

The legend should be inserted directly into the body of the text on a special line at the place where the figure should ideally appear.

Images should be provided in special files (they should not be inserted directly into the manuscript). The titles of the files should contain the number of the figure (e.g. figure1.jpg). Images should be of a sufficient quality for printing and the author must have permission to publish them in Religio including the electronic open-access version of the journal.

Reactions to contributions

Reactions to published texts (or reactions to reactions) are entered into a standard peer review process and their publication depends on a vote of the Editorial Board. Even reactions that have been solicited by the Editorial Board can be returned to the author for further editing or rejected.

Author’s copy

The editor will send the authors of contributions two copies of the issue in which their text has been published. In addition, an electronic version in PDF format can be downloaded from the Digital Library of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. In the line of our open-access policy, the authors may freely publish this final PDF version of their articles on their personal and/or institutional website, in any of their profiles in academic and non-academic social networks, etc., for non-commercial use only, on the condition that the file remains unchanged and a full bibliographical reference to the original publication in Religio: Revue pro religionistiku and a reference to the full version of the public licensing terms CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International are provided. More information the conditions under which a published work.

The journal does not remunerate authors for their contributions.
