Instructions for authors
Studia archaeologica Brunensia is a peer-reviewed journal issued by the Department of Archaeology and Museology at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University. It publishes original scientific papers focused on archaeology and related disciplines.
The authors are obliged to observe the Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement of SAB. Each paper is reviewed by two researchers who are independent of the editorial board and are not employed in the author’s parent institution.
The text has to be prepared in Microsoft Word and formatted as little as possible (single spacing, alignment to the left inclusive of headings, no indentation of the first line in a paragraph).
The hierarchy of headings and subheadings must be marked with numbers; for example, 1.2., 3.4.1., etc. Each paper must be equipped with an abstract in both Czech and English presenting the topic of the article in 7–12 lines and with 5–7 key words, also in English and Czech. Czech articles must include a summary in English or German, and vice versa. The summary should sufficiently encapsulate the content of the article (not only simply copy the Conclusion) and contain references to figures or the most important works cited. The length of the summary should be between one tenth and one fifth of the main text, but at least one half of a printed page. The corresponding author’s address and e-mail must be added after the summary.
All figures and table captions must be placed at the end of the text.
The entries listed in the References section must observe essentially the same rules as those in Archeologické rozhledy. Journals must be named in full, not in abbreviated form, and with the original numbering of volumes (i.e. Roman numerals must not be replaced by Arabic numerals, etc.). It is not necessary to mention the publisher. Before submitting the text, please check the list of references thoroughly – missing entries must be added and the redundant ones removed.
References to literature must be written in italics (only the surnames of authors and year) and put in brackets; individual names in collective references must be separated by en-dash surrounded by spaces, e.g.: (Bálek – Droberjar – Šedo 1994, 61) and the range of pages by en-dash without spaces (e.g. “112–130”), not by a hyphen “-”.
List of references – example:
- Bálek, M. – Droberjar, E. – Šedo, O. 1994: Die römischen Feldlager in Mähren, Památky archeologické LXXXV, 59–74.
- Kaufmann, D. 1994: Die Elbe-Saale-Gruppe der Jordansmühler Kultur. In: Internationales Symposium über die Lengyel-Kultur 1888–1988. Brno – Łódż, 112–130.
- Němejcová-Pavúková, V. 1995: Zwei Kreisgrabenanlagen der Lengyel-Kultur. Bratislava.
- Tejral, J. 1999: Die Völkerwanderungen des 2. und 3. Jhs. und ihr Niederschlag im archäologischen Befund des Mitteldonauraumes. In: J. Citations and list of references can be managed by citation manager EndNote.
An adequate number of graphics must be 127 × 175 mm in size. Pictures should be printed in this size before submission to ensure that numerals and captions, for example, included inside are not too small or too large. The most suitable kinds of illustrations are standard pen drawings and quality black-and-white photos. Graphic files must be submitted in .tiff or .jpg format, at resolutions of 1200 dpi for drawings and 400-600 dpi for photos. Be mindful of choosing the right scan mode for illustrations: pen drawings should be scanned in black-and-white mode, black-and-white photos in greyscale mode. Maps, plans and drawings must be equipped with a graphic scale or a north arrow where appropriate.
Numeric and other tables must be made in Microsoft Excell. Each table in separate Sheet of file. Tables could be also in TXT format, colums separated with Tab. The intended placement of figures/tables can be marked directly in the text (between two paragraphs) as follows:
