Abstrakt
Festovo Breviarium má jednak funkci informovat o průběhu rozšiřování imperia a o historii konfliktů na východě, jednak přesvědčovat, že vzdor neúspěchům byla římská expanze koneckonců vždy úspěšná, i apelovat na oprávněnost zamýšleného zásahu císaře Valenta na východní hranici. Úseky, v nichž stojí na předním místě informace o zdárném průběhu expanze, a úseky, v nichž k informaci přistupuje explikace s apely, se liší především ve stavbě souvětí. Toto svým charakterem propagační dílko je psáno tak, aby v souladu se svým posláním bylo srozumitelné širšímu okruhu čtenářů, jak vzdělanému, tak méně vzdělanému.
