Frauen und Männer im Dialogus miraculorum des Caesarius von Heisterbac

Vol.15,No.1(2010)

Abstract
The study offers a gender analysis of a selection of medieval examples from the collection entitled Dialogue about Miracles (Dialog über die Wunder) by Caesarius of Heisterbach. The paper aims, firstly, to describe the symmetric and asymmetric elements in depicting females and males; secondly, to inquire whether the texts incline to doing gender (exclusively linking particular spheres of acting/thinking with a man or woman). The gender analysis is based on nine areas involving secular and/or spiritual characters (adultery and incest; straying from the path of decent clergymen; preserving carnal purity; lies and deceptions; insinuating and goading; cantakerousness, stubbornness, irritability, noisiness, slander, envy, verbosity; blasphemy and curses; the strength of a lower-order piety; attitudes towards property).Among others, the analysis has revealed that men do gender namely as clergymen lusting for possessions; furthermore, only men act as exploiters, greedy servants and rustics. Negative connotations of doing female gender are construed as carelessness and verbosity; the most noticeable positive concept of doing gender with secular women consists in their steadfast faith and strong religious conviction.
