Author Guidelines
Archaeologia historica is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal and the papers published must therefore meet both professional and formal criteria resulting from this condition. When deciding about publication of a manuscript, the editorial board bases itself on evaluations by independent experts, but at the same time also takes into consideration the formal aspect of a manuscript (or recommends formal editing to the author respectively). The editorial board also decides on suitable dates for publication of individual texts. Unsolicited manuscripts will not be returned, no honoraria will be paid. The final decision on publication of all texts falls within the authority of the editorial board of the journal Archaeologia historica. All scientific papers in the main topical sections of the journal are peer-reviewed (non-reviewed are just the other contributions in the Chronicle and Reports sections).

Supplements: please supply a numbered list of all supplementary material in which the numbers are in strict correspondence with the numbers of individual supplements; references to supplements must be given in relevant parts of articles, e.g. (Fig. 1); each supplement must be submitted to the editorial board as an individual file, in the source format (e.g. value tables in Microsoft Excel). The maximum number of image attachments is 20 with a text length of 30 standard pages. That is, a maximum of 1 image attachment per approximately 1.5 standard pages of text.
- photographs: JPEG and TIF formats at a minimum definition of 600 dpi, size 18 x 13 cm; numbered photos must be submitted as individual files (not to be inserted in word files or transferred to pdf); colour photos will be printed in black and white; in exceptional cases, colour prints can be negotiated with the editorial board in advance; with information written in the photos, please submit the original (source) photographs as well, i.e. without description.

- vectors and other graphics: cross-sections, plans, reconstructions and maps created in GIS or CAD formats are to be transferred into JPEG, PDF, TIF and PNG formats. With other graphics it is possible to submit EPS, AI, PSD, PNG and TIF formats. The PSD format enables the preservation of layers (also TIF). With vector graphics the thickness of lines should be considered; it should not be less than 0.25b.
- value tables: excel format; numbered.
It is required that authors distinguish between dash and hyphen. Dash (on keyboard: –) is used with dates, authors, etc., without interword spacing. Hyphen (on keyboard: -) is to be used in accordance with practice in the source language, e.g. Brno-město.
Dimensions, e.g. 198 x 45 x 30 cm are written with a single space between numbers and “x”. Ditto % (5 % = five percent, but five-percent = 5%, without gap), cm (5 cm), etc.
When quoting pages do not use “n.” etc. (e.g. 37 n.), but state extent (e.g. 34–45).
References to documentation in the text should be in brackets, in small letters (Table I, Fig. 1).
Abbreviations: With general abbreviations, authors should follow the updated list at the end of AH (the latest issue). New abbreviations with their Full meaning must be provided at the end of the article, before literature.
Footnotes may be only employed in exceptional cases and must be then placed individually after the text. Numbers of footnotes in the text are marked in superscript. If the footnote number comes after a word followed by a punctuation mark, the number is placed after the punctuation mark.
Examples of citations:
In text:
- (Měřínský 2002, 16–20; 2002a, 49–50).
For pictures, page numbers should be provided if these are given with pictures in the publication cited (e.g. Fig. 1, p. 5). When citing literature, specific pages should be indicated if the reference does not cover an entire article on the subject (this also includes collations that cannot be completely cited, e.g. Plaček 2007, with concrete place indication, e.g. Plaček 2007, 475.)
- (Unger 1981, 63; Procházka–Doležel 2001, 37, 43, 58).
Authors are given in brackets only once; year and page follow, e.g. Plaček 2006, 47; 2006a, 147; citations must be separated by semi-colons. If the author is quoted in the article it is not necessary to repeat his or her name, e.g. ...as concluded by M. Plaček (2007, 47).
- (CDB III, 252–255 no. 197; CDB V/1, 79–87 no. 17).
Order: p. and no. without commas; V/1 order only from p. 1.
Abbreviations of archives and series; multiple citations from a single series should be differentiated with the indexes a, b… (see i, Manuscripts and archivalia).
- (List of archaeological locations 2009)
Internet sources without authors; if the author is given, these should be provided in brackets (author’s surname, year of citation; for lists see section Internet sources).
Sources and literature:
- Author or authors, year of publication: Title. Place of publication.
- Always put a comma between the first name initial and year:
- MĚŘÍNSKÝ, Z., 2002: České země od příchodu Slovanů po Velkou Moravu I. Praha.
- MĚŘÍNSKÝ, Z., 2002a: Rakousko před Rakouskem. In: Veber, V.–Hlavačka, M.–Vorel, P.–Polívka, M.–Wihoda, M.–Měřínský, Z., Dějiny Rakouska, 9–64. Praha.
- 2002 without index, then 2002a, 2002b etc.; please do not cite pages in the list of literature (they are cited in the text).
- When citing complete proceedings or an edited publication, the titles should be cited, not the editors:
- KAREL IV., 2006: Karel IV. Císař z boží milosti. Kultura a umění za vlády Lucemburků 1310–1437 (Fajt, J., ed.). Praha.
- CDB: Codex diplomaticus et epistolaris regni Bohemiae III/1–2, 1231–1240, (Friedrich G.–Kristen, Z., edd.). Pragae 1942–1962.

- This applies to non-periodical proceedings, not to periodicals such as PA, AH, AR, etc.; with non-periodical publications with citation “In:” author and title of the article as well as pages should be provided (if this rule is not observed, the editors reserve the right to return articles as looking up pages is a highly demanding task, particularly in regional periodicals).
Edited proceedings:
- One editor – ed., several editors – eds.
- Ed. or eds. is also provided when the publication contains “compiled by”, “prepared by”, etc.
Brno.

- The number or issue of the periodical is only given when individual numbers start from p. 1.

- With several citations from one archive series indexes are added – first citation ZA OPAVA, SKS; second ZA OPAVA, SKSa, etc.
