Research into the graveyard of the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Blovice

Abstract
In 2002 a company known as ZIP o.p.s. carried out archaeological research in relation to the modification of terrain (for sewer construction) by the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Blovice. Two preliminary probes were employed, revealing 3–5 levels of burials and the course of a stone graveyard wall, now defunct. The building development of the wall became the main target of research. Burials and masonry were also noted in ditches dug for sewage pipes. Two construction phases characterised the graveyard wall, the older of which may possibly be dated to the 16th century. The following phase comprised the construction of a staircase into the Chapel of the Holy Cross in 1833. In the course of the research, 29 bodies were recorded in the anatomical position, four of whom had been the recipients of grave goods. In addition to rosaries and a cross, box twigs (Buxus sempervirens) appeared as one unique find. Judging from stratigraphy results and the grave objects, the majority of the bodies date to the 17th– 18th centuries. Filled-in graves yielded graphite ceramics from the 13th–14th centuries, confirming settlement in the north section of the town.
