Possibilities of archaeological research into Modern-Age field fortifications on an example of a 1930's location

Vol.36,No.1(2011)

Abstract
This article takes the form of a preliminary publication of the outcome of research into a line of field fortifications that took place in autumn 1938 in the surroundings of the town of Úterý (Plzeň-north district). It relates the research procedure, positive findings and early interpretations of the information acquired. Archaeology remains the only science that can provide new information about the location, as detailed written sources have not survived or are not known, and those that have been preserved do not contain detailed information about the position of the fortification line in the terrain, its construction and composition.
