Radiocarbon dating of an early medieval burial ground in Radomyšl, near Strakonice

Vol.37,No.2(2012)

Abstract
Research into an early medieval burial ground in Radomyšl, near Strakonice was carried out in 1963–1968 by the Archaeological Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Follow-up research culminated in 1999 and 2002 with rescue research into the western and north-western sections of the burial ground prior to demolition work on the Tomanovna site. This early medieval burial ground from the late hillfort period has been, on the basis of the analysis of S-shaped rings and the general historical context, dated to the 12th century. The dating was assisted by finds of silver coinage, dinars from King Soběslav I (1125–1140) and his successor Vladislav II (1140–1172) at two opposite sides of the site (north and south edge). The burial ground originally contained 1000–1200 graves. Anthropological analysis carried out by M. Blajerová (1975, 1999) and demographic studies (Blajerová – Nechvátal 1991; 2008) were followed by anthropological analysis of the Tomanovna location (Stránská 2010). A strong dominance of brachycranial skulls emerged, supporting the theory that the series from Tomanovna should be grouped with earlier populations dating from the beginning of the 13th century. Distinct brachycephalization occurred in this period. Although some anthropologists maintain that hyperdolichocranial skulls did not feature at this time, this does not hold true in the case of the Tomanovna series. Results of the research have verified the existing dating. A supplementary radiocarbon analysis was carried out, sampling skeletal material from graves nos. 5 and 18. Radiocarbon dating places the two graves between AD 983 and 1187, thus supporting the original archaeological classification of the series to the 12th century.
