The manufacture of replicas of silver globular buttons from an early Medieval burial ground in Lumbe Garden, Prague Castle

Vol.39,No.1(2014)

Abstract
This contribution presents new information on the production technology of silver globular buttons from the early medieval burial ground of Lumbe Garden, Prague Castle, through the manufacture of replicas of large globular buttons with repoussé and chased decoration. The manufacture of replicas of the silver globular buttons from Lumbe Garden was triggered by the need to enhance the legibility of the finds for exhibition and research purposes. The replicas were also manufactured in an effort to minimize the handling of the originals which have deteriorated during burial and are now prone to mechanical damage. The most significant contribution gained from the manufacture of these replicas (and their subsequent detail study) is the deeper understanding of early medieval jewellery-making technologies employed in Czech territory.
