Peťuša castle from the high Middle Ages

Vol.42,No.2(2017)

Abstract
This paper seeks to present to the specialist public research into the defunct Peťuša castle and its results, as well as to discuss its post-medieval use. The castle was built on an oval ground plan (40 × 20 m) and functioned in the high and late Middle Ages. It is located near the town of Zvolen, within view of the Pustý hrad castle. Archaeological research into the location started in 2011 and has been conducted by the Department of Archaeology of the University of Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra. Virtually no written and iconographic sources related to the castle are known. The castle is encircled by a mighty stone wall. Remains of earth and timber structures and sporadic remains of stone architecture were unearthed in the courtyard. The origin of the castle is placed, on the basis of rich material culture, to the late 13th century. The castle had its heyday in the high Middle Ages, in the 14th century and in the 15th century, when it ceased to exist. An exceptional find is a modern-age vessel from the 16th century excavated in the upper cultural layer, which is possible to reconstruct. There is also clear evidence that worked stones from the coating of a cylindrical water tower were removed from it after the decline of the castle and transferred elsewhere.
