In our contribution, we deal with the language situation and the position of French in Burundi. The position of French in this country is not as solid as in other African French-speaking countries in the north. France does not have a good position in the region and Belgium has sort of forgotten its former colonies. Due to historical, political, economical and geographical reasons, the French remains a language of a very restricted part of the population of Burundi, representing the local social elite.
