Abstract
In the novel "Defence" there emerges, for the first time in Nabokov's writing, a three-part model of the universe: reality physical — irrational mystic — metafictional. The specific chess colouring of the very topic of the novel. The transcendental reality appears here as the-other-world chess game, the metafiction, as chess-inspired creation.
