Possibilities and limits of the use of a tax register as a source of information about a network of watermills in west and south-west Plzeňsko region

Abstract
This contribution summarises a study of watermills in the period preceding the Battle of White Mountain (1620) in selected areas west and south-west of Plzeň, as listed in the tax register of the Plzeňsko region. Selected analysis of watermills from this register has disclosed an uneven distribution of them in the second half of the 17th century. A remarkable absence of watermills occurs in the valley of Hamerský potok, an important left-bank tributary of the River Mže, the vicinity of which has been settled since the Middle Ages. Data from town registers dated 1555 and 1666 and those from the Theresian Cadastre serving as comparator material have shown a more even distribution of watermills before the existence of the tax register and after its issue. This opens up discussion of reasons underlying this situation and invites objective criticism of certain sources used in archaeology.
