Abstract
Jean de Rotrou, a 17th century French playwright, has adapted a considerable number of Spanish, Italian, Greek and Latin dramatic sources. The aim of this paper is to analyse his adaptations of Plautus's Menaechmi, one of his three adaptations of Plautus's comedies. The adaptation is analysed in the context of aemulation and les belles infidèles that were characteristic of the French 17th century literary practice. Rotrou's adaptation has largely contributed to Plautus's reception in France, as well as to the restoration of the comedy in 17th century French Theatre.
