Comics transformations of literary works in contemporary Czech literary communication

This paper explores transformation of the works of literature into comics, paying special attention to two questions:(1) To what extent is it possible to accept comics transformations of literary works as a relevant part of literary communication? (2) Under what circumstances can comics transformations of literary works be employed in teaching? In order to demonstrate a commendable and a totally inappropriate presentations of a transformed literary work, the author uses the comics versions of Erben's fairy tale The Tall Guy, the Stout Guy and the Sharp-eyed Guy and Dickens' novel Oliver Twist, respectively; the analysis is focused on using comparative methods and graphic potentialities of the comics (visualising the description of the scene, characters and surroundings; verbalising the thoughts and sounds; fixing on the detail in facial expressions; expressing a visually distinct atmosphere; inserting "redundant verbalisation" to keep symmetry between the picture and the words; transforming the narrator's voice into the interior monologue of a character, etc.).
