In the past, the names of a number of artists have been linked with the ceiling paintings in the church of St. Michael in Olomouc: Ferdinand Naboth, Joseph Dragan, Matouš Pitzek, and J. Fried. It was assumed that the paintings that originally decorated the interior of the church were destroyed by fire in 1709 soon after they had been finished, and were subsequently repainted. As the ceiling paintings were substantially affected by the renovation of the church interiors in 1894–1898, the original Baroque frescoes were believed to have all been completely or partly destroyed and either repainted or painted over in the 19th century. This article identifies in the pendentives of all three domes the presence of the original Baroque frescoes, which were painted before the fire by the Italian painter Innocenzo Monti, and also considers the question of who painted the other ceiling paintings.
