Vol.29,No.3(2019)

Abstract
The article is dedicated to disclosure of historical and literary connections of "Old Portraits" by Turgenev with the mentioned Bunin's stories. It is proved that Turgenev's work has similarities with "Antonov Apples" based on the motive of admiring Russia's cultural and historical past and the motive of patriarchal harmony. And with the "Ancient Man" has interrelation of the motive of persistent questioning about foretime with the aim of recreating historically significant realities. The vector of historicism in this composition is also directed deep into the after Peter the Great's time and far into the European past. Such historicism is accordant with Bunin in whose work the theme of remembrance has a conceptual, ideological significance. If in the last story Bunin alters Turgenev tradition by filling it with the opposite meaning, then in the other two he varies Turgenev's ideas and images giving them a nostalgic sound. Turgenev tradition is fundamental to the mentioned Bunin's stories.
