The contribution considers the literary canon as an unstable category in the synchronic and diachronic context of the literary ontogenesis of Russian literature. In historiographic dimensions it defines the canon as a process of constant effort to conserve concrete aesthetic ideas in time and place, and simultaneously a permanent struggle for liberation from prescriptive (period, regional, ideological) norms, determined in the sense of the changing factors of axiological and sociological basis of a given culture and literary provenience. The contours of literary canon in its original normative function are today more than ever ungraspable and fused with the implicitly present potential of their rediscovery and reconstruction in new literary and artistic structures.
