The city in F. Sologub's novel "The Petty Devil"

Abstract
The author studies the peculiarities of the literary contact with Gogol's poem "Dead Souls" in F. Sologub's novel "The Petty Devil". The important parallels which F. Sologub's novel project on Gogol's poem are considered. The particular attention is paid to the comparison of the provincial town in these works. There are studied the functions of rumours and gossips and their influence on the behaviour of the characters of the novel, as well as on the development of the main motives and plot intrigues are studied. The reasons and forms of flight from the city of Gogol' and F. Sologub's heroes are compared.
