Sasha Sokolov - a Russian-Canadian Hrabal

Vol.11,No.1(2008)

Abstract
Both authors use a rich language, a special types of stylization (e. g., the pub story in Hrabal's novel I Served the King of England, or the school essay in Sokolov's novel A School for Fools), stream-of-consciousness and poetically organized lists as the dominant stylistic device. The main hero of the novel A School for Fools - a talented boy, who preteds to be mentally handicapped in order to preserve his own identity and independence - is very close to the picturesque characters of Hrabal's works. All of them are outstanding personalities, only their stylization is different, as the tradition of "holly madmen" (yurodiviye) did not exist in the Czech society. Both of the authors - Sokolov and Hrabal - are also close to each other in their philosophy of life.
