The article is dedicated to a traditional theme of Russian literature - that of the "common man" in the unstable situation at the beginning of the 20t h century. In the Russian literature of the 19th century the common man has been mostly depicted as a victim of the social stratification, but the short story Гражданин Уклейкин by Ivan Shmelev (written in 1907) showed the hero - the shoemaker Uklejkin - as a victim of the falsely interpreted ideology, of the political backrooms and of normal human weaknesses of a worker of the same social status; this worker deprived him of the common happiness and satisfaction.
