In this article we make a publication of archival documents – the letters of the outstanding Russian philologist of the XX century Boris M. Eikhenbaum, addressed in 1914–1915 to the Academician Aleksei A. Shakhmatov. Its contents provides insight into the formation of Eikhenbaum's scientific interest, as well as gives evidence concerning an active participation, which Shakhmatov took in Eihhenbaum's destiny, and a permanent close contact of the young scientist and the leader of Russian philology at that time.
