The author of the article describes her experience of teaching the novel Crime and Punishment by the celebrated Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky to British students. The researcher emphasises the difference between Western and Russian philosophy and literature, and gives a detailed description of the Russian cultural context. From a discussion of civilizational differences, the author then moves on to the actual analysis of the novel, and places its heroes in the broader framework of Russian literature. In doing so, she draws attention to what she deems the most significant aspects of Dostoevsky's work.
