The author of the present article summarizes the Czech media discussion on the anniversary of the Cyrill and Methodius mission in 2013 demonstrating its ideological character, its modernization and topicality and a low degrese of historicity. The mission is predominantly understood as negative in connection with the danger of "Eastern" drift of the Czech state and and the expulsion of Methodiuus' disciples from Great Moravia is evaluated positively. The author – in reference to Frank Wollman's book Literature of the Slavs – demonstrates the common Mediterranean cradle of European civilization, artificiality of the division of Europe into the West and the East, the necessity of the balance between historicity and transcendence, open discussion and the significance of the mission as a manifestation of the original message of the Gospel in the sense of non-violence, non-constraint and freedom of decision-making.
