Abstract
The year 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the birth and 30th anniversary of the death of Karel Kryl, Czech singer-songwriter, poet and graphic artist. The article highlights the family environment in which the future bard grew up, the spiritual traditions he espoused and the moral values he upheld. Kryl and his relatives suffered the same fate as many representatives of the intellectuals and artistic circles who were socially engaged during the Prague Spring and the subsequent occupation of Czechoslovakia. The singer-songwriter was an opponent of the communist regime despite many oppressions and a symbol of defiance against the occupation for a part of society. After his return from exile, he was bothered by the inconsistent coping with the past and the moral contradictions of post-communist society. The article wants to break the stereotype of Kryl, which persisted after 1989, as a bitter and eternally dissatisfied querulant. His generally human lyrics remain valid to this day, and the ideas contained in them reveal the strength of Kryl's character
