Dear colleagues,

In the follow-up of the 2018 Theatralia Conference which focused on the work and personality of the Czech aesthetician Otakar Zich and the Prague Linguistic Circle, the peer-reviewed journal Theatralia: Journal of Theatre Studies is announcing a call for papers for publication in the issue of Spring 2020.

Theatralia: Journal of Theatre Studies, issue 1/2020 ‘Otakar Zich and a Structural Approach to Art’ will be dedicated to theatre theory and the continuing legacy of the founding figure of theatre structuralism, Otakar Zich, and of the Prague Linguistic Circle. The journal is published by the Department of Theatre Studies, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. It is a peer-reviewed, open-source humanities scholarly journal listed in databases such as SCOPUS and ERIH+.

Czech music aesthetician, musicologist, theatre and literary theorist, composer and critic Otakar Zich (1879–1934) is a founding figure of modern theatre theory, and a great number of theorists have related their work to him and his concepts. The Department of Theatre Studies at Masaryk University has been conducting a research on Zich and preparing an English critical edition of Zich’s seminal work The Aesthetics of Dramatic Art (1931). It hosted a conference on Zich in June 2018, which focused on papers related to the exploration of the contexts, reception and critical heritage of Zich’s Aesthetics and other aspects of his oeuvre. The conference has opened a way for a reassessment of Otakar Zich and the structural approach to art and particularly, theatre.

The Theatralia journal issue 1/2020 will mainly focus on the following fields related to Zich and the structural approach to art: theatre theory (and history), history and theory of music, and general aesthetics.

The length of the articles should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words and all articles should be in English. For stylesheet and formal requirements, please see http://www.phil.muni.cz/journals/index.php/theatralia/pages/view/authors.

Articles on other topics, as well as relevant reviews, reports, historical findings announcements and archival documents will be considered for publication.

Please, send your abstracts (150-200 words) to theatralia@phil.muni.cz or to the editors.

The issue 1/2020 will be published in April 2020.

Sincerely yours,

Tomas Kacer (kacer@phil.muni.cz) and Svitlana Shurma (lanashurma@gmail.com),
