Aims and scope

Linguistica Brunensia is an open-access peer-reviewed scientific journal published since 2009 by Masaryk University in Brno. The journal focuses on general linguistics and publishes articles on key topics related to the structure and use of natural language. It focuses on research based on formal approaches to natural language analysis as well as on descriptions of language phenomena. Both synchronic and diachronic studies from all linguistic subdisciplines are published. Due to the tradition of the journal, we prefer studies based on (i) research on specific languages, especially Slavic languages (with emphasis on Czech), and (ii) studies examining specific languages in a broader typological and the historical-comparative perspective.

The journal focuses mainly on the following areas:
• Formal linguistics
• Descriptive linguistics
• Corpus Linguistics
• Diachronic linguistics

Journal sections:
• Articles (peer-reviewed studies)
• Materials (peer-reviewed studies)
• Chronicle
• Reviews and reports
• Suplementa

The journal is published twice a year. Articles in English, Czech, Russian and German are published. Studies published in the Articles and Materials section undergo a double-blind peer-review process. Contributions are accepted at the end of February (1st issue) and at the end of June (2nd issue) using the on-line editorial-management portal.

In addition to the main section ‘Articles,’ where studies of selected language issues are included, the journal also consists of the sections Materials, Reviews and Reports, Chronicle and Supplements, which are not necessarily represented in each issue. In the "Materials" section, there are shorter studies that provide descriptions of organized language material for further study. The Chronicle section presents biographies and bibliographies of significant linguists. In the Review and Report section, contributors critically evaluate linguistic publications and report on current developments in academic linguistics (conferences, workshops, seminars, etc.). The Supplements section includes review articles that do not produce new results or innovative approaches, only compile previously published data.

Publishing schedule

Until 2023 the journal was being published twice a year in the print and electronic version. Since 2024 it is being published twice a year in the electronic version. The first issue is being published 31 June of the given year, the second issue is being published 31 December of the given year. Once a paper is accepted for publication, it is assigned to an appropriate issue depending on its topic. Prior to this it can be published in the online first format.

Digital access and archiving policy

Full texts of articles are available in the Digital Library of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, which is the primary source and repository of academic publications at the Faculty of Arts. The journal websites (built in Open Journal Systems) contain links to the fulltext articles archived in the Digital Library. The journal website is used mainly as a presentation platform for accessing all the information about the journal.

This approach to long-term access and digital archiving of fulltexts "in one place" (i.e., in the Digital Library) is a strategic decision that was adopted by the Faculty of Arts many years ago. It allows us to ensure high-quality and consistent processing of metadata as well as long-term preservation (LTP) of digital documents, enabling users to search through all the texts.
