The paintings in the bye-altars of the Franciscan church in Moravská Třebová : on the work of Franz Laurenz Korompay

Vol.65,No.1(2016)

Abstract
This article presents new findings on the frequently overlooked issue of the paintings from the third quarter of the 18th century in the Franciscan Church of St Josef in Moravská Třebová / Mährisch Trübau. To date the only painters that have been mentioned in the literature as working for the Franciscans in Moravská Třebová are Judas Thaddäus Supper, who was living in Moravská Třebová and is attributed with doing the main retable paintings on the bye-altars, and Johann Lucas Kracker, a resident of Znojmo who in 1759 is attributed with creating the small-format paintings in the mensas to complete the altar decorations. The incongruity between the tone of the work in some of the paintings attributed to Kracker that has already been noted and ascribed to the use of different modes of painting is now explained by attributing the authorship of several paintings to the Brno painter Franz Laurenz Korompay.
