In the first part of the article we briefly introduce a novel written by Serbian author Milorad Pavić called Drugo telo. In the second part the Serbian original version is compared to its Slovak translation by Karol Chmel. Based on the analysis we observe that translation of a literary text does not consist only of the exchange of linguistic tools between two language systems, but it is a very complicated process based especially on the general erudition of the translator, too. Even though the genetic relation of the Serbian and Slovak languages makes their mutual understanding easier, an automatic translatability is not guaranteed without the necessary linguistic preparation.
