Methodology Problems of the Research in the Information Science
Vol.3,No.1(2011)
Methodological Issues in Library and Information Studies and Current Research in the Field
In the context od determination of methodology of scientific research the paper explains two methodological approaches of information science. Traditions of experimental concepts of informatics and theoretical philosophical and social-psychological concepts of research in information science are described. The identity of information science as a social science is sought for, with focus on complex sociotechnical systems and processes (information retrieval and seeking, information behavior, digital libraries). Methodological dichotomies of information science are caused by contradictions between objective and subjective knowledge, and between quantitative and qualitative perspectives. Current methodological approaches of information science are characterized (philosophical-analytic, cognitive, social, and pluralistic). As an example an own methodological concept to the research of information ecology is mentioned in dimensions of semantics, information behavior, and visualization of information. Based on the experience in teaching a seminar for PhD. students Methodology of research in information science most frequent methodological problems in research are identified, especially links between theory and practice of research. In conclusion trends of development in methodology of information science towards deepening of sociotechnical integrity in solving new transdisciplinary problems as, e.g. identity, creativity, or credibility in communicating information and information use in society.
