Scholarly communication and information sharing in scientific social networks

Vol.4,No.1(2012)
Internet social networks

Abstract

Most of scientific and research activities take place mainly in research teams, often on international basis. That puts high requirements on communication, information sharing among research teams and research communities, and on finding new research partners. The article deals with scientific social networks, in particular with databases of scholar profiles.

The main intention of these networks is to create a platform for sharing and dissemination of reviewed information, to offer possibilities of finding new research partnerships, or simply present one’s own research results. With this intention the networks help to increase the awareness of publication activities and citation rates of individual authors. There is a large number of commercial as well as free social networks available.

After the initial introduction and definition, the second part of the article compares the chosen social networks of scholar profiles regarding its typology and ways of information dissemination to point out the methods of work with them. In the following part I will analyze the methods of work of the chosen Czech researchers with these networks. The analysis will also look at how many people in the Czech Republic and from which universities have their profile in such networks. The conclusion will then evaluate the habits of work with these systems and will assess their contribution for research activities.
