Articulatory settings in het Nederlands en in het Tsjechisch

Vol.26,No.1(2012)

Abstract
This article discusses the phenomenon of articulatory settings in phonetics and in pronunciation teaching as a useful tool for the improvement of pronunciation of intermediate and advanced Czech learners of Dutch. The author focuses on the comparison of the articulatory settings of Dutch - both of the Northern and the Southern standard varieties - and Standard Czech. The internal articulatory settings are analyzed based on the comparison of the sound statistics of the languages in question and on scientific literature. The description of the external settings is mainly based on the scientific literature. The objective of the author is to compare the two systems of articulatory settings and to argue that teaching Dutch pronunciation via the articulatory settings may be very effective in achieving a native level of Dutch and means a complex approach to pronunciation teaching; moreover the author will, based on the comparison and description of the articulatory settings, show which of the two varieties of Dutch is easier/more likely to adapt for a Czech speaker of Dutch to achieve a native-like accent.
