Abstrakt
In this essay, I focus on the public appearances of the Congolese religious prophet, Simon Kimbangu. In 1921, he represented one of the greatest threats to the Belgian colonial system. He claimed to be the voice of Jesus Christ and proclaimed the equality of all human beings before the Holy Trinity. Through the analysis of various testimonies, interviews or official websites of the Kimbanguist religion movement, I will define the role of Kimbangu's prophecies in the colonial era but also in the de/postcolonial era. I will focus on the consequences of his public behaviour not only on the Kimbanguists themselves but also on the postcolonial political scene of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Furthermore, I will concentrate on the image that the Kimbanguists propagate about their predecessor. I will compare the function of this image as a state or nation-forming element, but also as a religious path toward liberation of the spirit.
