The aim of the paper is to analyze the spatial distribution of elementary schools in the Czech Republic based on informa-tion from official statistical databases. The current state o f the primary school network is compared with the situation in 1961 in order to identify geographical processes characterizing spatial changes of the elementary schools network in the second half of the 20 th century. The paper concludes with sketching out some potential consequences of this spatial change in different types of context. Special focus is on the process of closing down schools. To obtain satisfactory answers to the questions arising in connection with school closures, the intensive research in individual microregions would however be necessary, the paper concludes.
