Education of Immigrant Children from the Perspective of Equal Educational Opportunities

Vol.23,No.3(2018)
Studia paedagogica

Abstract
This study uses partial results from broader research done for the aim of a dissertation which examined the topic of adaptation support for immigrant children in elementary schools in the Czech and Norwegian contexts. The importance of providing equal educational opportunities to immigrant children has emerged as one of the key topics of the initial analyses. The aim of this qualitatively oriented study is therefore to understand the current state of the education of immigrant children in elementary schools from the perspective of equal educational opportunities in the Czech context. The study concentrates on the following research questions: How do Czech teachers perceive equal opportunities for immigrant children and how do they try to provide them in the context of their schools? The main finding of the study is that teachers have found the concept of equal educational opportunities for immigrant children to be utopian due to insufficient school support offered by the ministry. The teachers consider this as the reason they are largely restricted in creating specific conditions for immigrant children. Due to the ministry's low support for schools, teachers tend to mitigate the inequalities for immigrant children rather than strive for their equality in the educational process.
